Beginning on 18th February, the current Disability Royal Commission hearing is focusing on the provision of health care services to people with disability.
So far, advocates have stressed the importance of supported decision making for people with disability in their health care choices, and highlighted deficiencies in communication and education regarding disability in the health care sector.
People with disability have spoken about their experiences. One particular scenario provided by a parent of a child with Down Syndrome described the frustration of “negotiating the health system and needing to relay information from one professional to another.”
Inconsistencies in the provision of adequate healthcare by disability service providers have been highlighted, with recommendations such as disability liaison roles in hospitals submitted as a means of rectifying the imbalance experienced by participants and their families.
Interaction will continue to provide updates throughout the Royal Commission.
